Sanswire-TAO Completes Rapid Deployment and Launch Testing
Posted by: VIC / Category: News AlertsSTUTTGART, GERMANY and FORT LAUDERDALE, FL–(MARKET WIRE)–Apr 28, 2009 — Sanswire-TAO, www.sanswiretao.com, the airship manufacturing joint venture equally owned by Sanswire Corp. (Other OTC:SNSR.PK - News), www.sanswire.com, and TAO Technologies GmbH, today announced that it has completed a series of tests evaluating the performance of the rapid deployment and launch sequence of its patented, multi-segmented Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) unmanned airship. In compliance with the Company’s spiral development schedule, more than twenty (20) rapid deployment and launch tests were conducted using a multi-segmented, non-rigid, 23m (75ft) long scaled prototype of the STS-111, the Company’s larger mid-altitude airship.
Testing of the long scaled prototype included many low altitude flight sequences which tested the airship’s ability to be rapidly deployed and recovered with minimal ground infrastructure and human assistance. Sanswire-TAO also successfully tested the integration of an improved engine gimbal with increased control of the vector thrust engine application. The airship was also outfitted with a modified engine mount coupled to the improved electronic flight controls, resulting in better maneuverability and control compared to previous test flights. These testing sequences proved the overall design and subsystems met the goals of providing superior body behavior in flight, increased mobility in flight through the vectoring thrust, and rapid deployment and safe recovery utilizing minimal ground support.
The patented “airchain” design contains several inherent advantages; it can be rapidly unfolded, prepared, and launched within hours. The non-rigid stealth-like body design enables the multi-segmented airship to be unpackaged and prepared for its mission virtually anywhere, without the need for a large hangar and mooring station. The airship was transported to the test site in a small truck and is designed to be transported in standard commercial vehicles. In addition to portability and flexibility, other inherent advantages are its superior fluid flight characteristics and a unique flight behavior with an unparalleled ability to cope with gusts throughout flight.
Jonathan Leinwand, Sanswire CEO, said, “Our optimized testing schedule continues to provide new information which advances the development of the STS-111 airship. Our unique, non-rigid design contains various efficiencies compared to other larger semi-rigid or rigid ‘blimp-like’ applications. These include low acquisition cost, minimal hourly operation cost, drastically reduced ground infrastructure costs, and most importantly, reduced human operational requirements. These are obvious advantages that we believe will render the STS-111 airship one of the most useful in certain applications that require immediate operational deployments utilizing a minimal mobile ground crew.”
Sanswire-TAO’s range of airships are designed to address specific commercial and government needs for persistent, medium to long duration applications at medium and in the near future, high altitudes to support homeland and border security and various other applications in the operational arena.
